5 Things to do While You’re ‘Quiet Quitting’

Whether you call it “quiet quitting” or simply feeling less-than-engaged in your work, it may be time to start setting yourself up for your next move. Consider redirecting your energy toward rediscovering what lights you up and building a path toward more fulfilling work.

Here are five things you can do now – before actually quitting:

  1. Browse LinkedIn or Indeed for dream job openings. Don’t worry about whether you’re qualified for them, just keep the ones that get you excited. When you have a few collected, look back over them and see what they have in common for clues on what you might want to do next.

  2. Keep a “Good Time Journal.” This is an exercise from the book Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. Essentially, you write down everything you do in a day and rate it on how engaged and energized you feel while you’re doing it.

  3. Explore your interests. Read a book, listen to a new podcast, or take a class or workshop on something that sparks your interest. (I like listening to the audio-only versions of Masterclass courses while walking or doing chores.)

  4. Create a vision for your future. Write down, with as much detail as possible, what you’d like to be doing in three years.

    1. Where are you living?

    2. How are you spending your time?

    3. Who are you with?

    4. How much fun are you having?

    5. What impact are you making?

  5. Catalog your accomplishments. Go back through past performance reviews, email conversations, documents and calendars. Write down your wins and tangible results while they’re still fresh in your mind. Hopefully, you’ll get a confidence boost AND you’ll also be setting yourself up for future interviews.

No matter where you are in your career, taking some time to reflect on how you’d like to grow is the first step toward finding work where you feel more engaged and fulfilled.
